Dump valves

are an important component fitted to the engines of turbocharged cars. The dump valve sits between the throttle body and the compressor outlet. When changing from a boosted state to a closed throttle state (for example when the driver is changing gear) the turbo continues to pressurise air. The closed throttle prevents the compressed air from entering the engine. The pressure eventually exceeds the spring pressure in the dump valve and the excess pressure is released, preventing a dangerous build-up of pressure in the turbo housing.
