Black cabs in London are going green

Black cabs in London are going green. London Taxi Company changed its name to The London Electric Vehicle Company (LEVC) back in September and is keen to live up to their name. It recently showcased new models in July and rolled out a few test models in October.

The new model is called TX. It has a miniature petroleum generator with a battery electric power train. Drivers have a range of 80 miles on electric and a total range close to 400 miles.

It has 6 seats, contactless card machines, USB charging and Wi-fi. Taxi Prices start  at £55,599, and LEVC says it will save drivers on average £100 a week in fuel.

Chris Gubbey, chief executive of the LEVC, said:

After extensive testing, LEVC’s new taxi is ready to do the job it was made for: transport people around this great city of London safely, cleanly and stylishly.

Better for passengers, more cost effective for drivers, it will play a major role in helping to improve air quality benefiting all Londoners. I am immensely proud of the work we have carried out so far: we have produced a new icon, the world’s most advanced electric taxi.

LEVC has already agreed to take these taxis to Amsterdam, and  deliver new models in Europe.

From January, all new London taxis will have to be zero emissions capable. This is part of the mayor’s proposition to improve air quality in the capital.

However, a proposition to  introduce 75 rapid charging points by the end of the year may not happen until 2018, though mayor Sadiq Khan said the rate of delivery is expected “to rise dramatically”.

He said that Transport for London is prioritizing the delivery ” so there is enough coverage to meet demand from taxi drivers as they change to zero emission capable vehicles from the beginning of the year”.
