Four Year MOT Proposal Will Fail UK Motorists

Euro Car Parts along with The Independent Automotive Aftermarket Federation and TyreSafe are supporting an official petition to urge the government to scrap their plans to extend a cars first MOT from 3 years to a four year MOT. The government are promoting the four year MOT proposal in a positive light by saying that it will save UK motorists an estimated £100m a year, but at what cost?

Why the Four Year MOT Proposal Will Fail UK Motorists

Official statistics from the year 2015-2016 have revealed that 17% of cars having their first MOT failed the initial test. MOT testers identified over 400,000 serious defects on these vehicles. These MOT failures included 24,628 suspension failures, 47,138 brake failures and 85,720 tyre failures.

When you look at figures such as these, extending the first test to a four year MOT could have disastrous consequences, which would lead to over 410,000 unsafe vehicles being allowed on the road LEGALLY.

Why your annual MOT is important

Whilst we all dread our annual MOT (and the related costs), it is more than just a legal requirement. As a driver you should want to know that your vehicle is safe. Not just for your own piece of mind, but for the safety of everyone around you. The DVSA (Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency) revealed that 40% of cars and 50% of vans failed their MOT last year at first attempt.

2016 saw a fall in the number of UK road deaths, which the government have attributed to improved vehicle safety. The current 3 year first MOT identifies potentially dangerous vehicles and has been proven to be an important safety milestone. This needs to be maintained as there are millions of UK motorists who rely on their annual MOT to alert them to anything untoward with their vehicle.

Extending the length of a first MOT for new vehicles should be strongly discouraged. To that end we urge you to help support the following petition ‘Maintain the current first MOT date for cars at three years‘.
