The timing belt connects the crankshaft to the camshaft(s), which in turn controls the opening and closing of the engine's valves. Timing chains will typically last much longer than timing belts, although they are still prone to wear over long periods of time. A worn timing chain can be diagnosed by a rattling or chattering noise from the cylinder head.
