What Car Bulbs Do I Need For My Car?

Your car uses a whole range of bulbs across various systems; headlights, indicator bulbs, interior lights and fog lights all play their part in keeping you and other road users visible.

Different makes and models will need different bulbs, so it’s important to choose the right type for your vehicle. Check your car manual to learn which bulbs you need, or use our reg checker to find bulbs suited to your vehicle.

When Should I Replace My Car Bulbs?

It's good practice to check your car lights are all working correctly at least once a month. If you have a newer car, you might see a bulb warning light on your dashboard, but it’s also quick and easy to check your lights manually. Park up in a safe place, turn your ignition on, and then walk around your car to check every light is bright. If your headlights look dull, they might just need to be cleaned rather than replaced – luckily, restoring your headlights is a simple DIY job.

If you notice any signs that your lightbulbs are dimming, flickering or completely burnt out, you’ll need to replace them straight away. Learn more about maintaining and changing your car bulbs.

FAQs

Should I Change Both My Headlight Bulbs At The Same Time?

We recommend changing both of your headlight bulbs at the same time. Your headlights tend to degrade at roughly the same time, so replacing them at the same time saves you another trip to the garage. It also means you’ll avoid any brightness or colour inconsistencies between your headlight bulbs, which can often be distracting to all other road users.

How Long Do Car Bulbs Usually Last?

This depends on the type of car bulb you have, and what conditions you’re driving in. LED bulbs last longer than standard halogen bulbs, but if you regularly drive in the dark or you have headlights that turn on automatically, you’re likely to see your car lights burn out more quickly.

Are The Brake Light And Taillight The Same Bulb?

Some cars use the same bulb for their brake light and taillight, but this depends on your vehicle’s make and model. It's always best to check your car’s user manual before you buy any replacement bulbs.
