What Are Coil Springs?

An integral part of your car’s suspension, coil springs are designed to absorb any shocks. Coil springs are suspension components that support the weight of your vehicle and absorb the impact from bumps and uneven road surfaces.

Every car has four coil springs, and they work alongside your shock absorbers to keep your tyres in contact with the road, making sure your car stays stable and balanced. As well as safer handling, they also ensure a far more comfortable drive for you and your passengers.

There are two main types of coil springs: linear and progressive. Linear coil springs are most common in everyday cars and compress at a consistent rate, making handling more reliable. Progressive coil springs appear more often in high-performance cars and racing cars. Since they have a variable spring rate and get stiffer the more they compress, progressive coil springs are smoother over small bumps and handle bigger impacts better.

How Long Do Coil Springs Last?

Most coil springs are made from high-strength steel and are built to last anywhere between 60,000 and 90,000 miles before needing to be replaced. This, however, will also depend on your driving style and how regularly your suspension system is maintained. For guidance specific to your car, check your owner’s manual for your specific manufacturer’s recommendation.

How To Tell If Your Coil Springs Need Replacing

Over time, coil springs can lose their elasticity with general wear and tear. Since worn coil springs can seriously affect your safety, it’s always important to keep an eye out for any issues.

Here are some common warning signs that your coil springs might need to be replaced:

  • Your car feels unstable on turns and uneven road surfaces
  • Clunking or creaking noises when going over bumps or potholes
  • Your car looks like it’s sitting lower on one side or sagging in one corner
  • Your car is bottoming out and hitting the ground after bumps
  • Uneven or excessive tyre wear on one or more tyres
  • Unusual leaning when turning your vehicle
  • Visible rust or damage on the spring itself

FAQs

Can I Drive with A Broken Coil Spring?

No, it’s illegal to drive with a broken coil spring. A damaged or broken coil spring will affect your entire suspension system, making your vehicle unstable and unsafe to drive. You even risk losing control of your car, putting you and other road users in serious danger.

Can I Change My Coil Springs Myself?

Changing coil springs is a complex task that is not easy to do yourself, as you’ll need advanced tools and a solid understanding of car suspension systems. We recommend getting your car’s coil springs changed by a qualified mechanic to ensure your safety and proper vehicle performance.

Why Do Coil Springs Need to Be Replaced in Pairs?

Coil springs work together in pairs on your front and rear axles to keep your car stable. So, when one needs to be replaced, the other in the front or rear pair also has to be replaced. This will guarantee a matched height and spring rate and help maintain a balanced suspension.
