Four-stroke engines – most commonly seen in cars, lawnmowers and generators – require oil to keep their moving parts from seizing up and overheating. As well as keeping parts lubricated, four-stroke oil also forms a light coating that protects them from the effects of moisture and rusting over time. Four-stroke oil is sold in a wide variety of viscosities, such as 10w40 (the “W” stands for “winter”). This basically tells you how thick or thin the oil is, and the temperatures at which it performs best.
