What is brake fluid?

Essential to the braking system, brake fluid is usually a mineral oil or silicone-based formula with a high boiling point. It allows hydraulic pressure to be transferred from the brake master cylinder to the brakes.

Without the right amount of high-quality brake fluid in your braking system, your stopping distance will be longer, and your brake parts can be more easily damaged. Dark, dirty or low brake fluid should be changed every 2 years to avoid contamination.

Signs your brake fluid might need changing:

  • Your brake pedal isn’t responding
  • Your brake pedal feels spongy when you apply pressure
  • Noisy brakes when pressing the pedal
  • Your ABS warning light is on
  • Brake pads are vibrating

How often should I change my brake fluid?

As a general rule, brake fluids should be replaced every two years. Over time, brake fluids absorb moisture from the environment that eventually corrodes the braking system, and can make your brakes feel spongy and ineffective. Changing your brake fluid removes moisture buildup, keeps your braking system lubricated and makes sure you can safely stop your car in good time.

Regular brake bleeding (or removing the air from your brake fluid) can also extend the lifespan of your brake fluid and is often carried out at the same time as a fluid change. Learn how to bleed your brakes.

FAQs

Do I need DOT 3 or DOT 4 brake fluid?

Different makes and models need different types of brake fluid, so you’ll see DOT 3 and DOT 4 types while you’re browsing. DOT 3 is usually reserved for older cars, while DOT 4 is commonly used in more modern vehicles. Use our registration checker to get tailored brake fluid results for your car, or check your user manual to make sure you’re purchasing the right type.

What will happen if I use the wrong kind of brake fluid?

It’s really important that you use the correct brake fluid for your car – the wrong one could cause damage to your braking system, and impact how safely you can stop or slow down while driving.

Is brake fluid the same as clutch fluid?

Yes, most modern vehicles use the same brake and clutch fluid. Both are hydraulic fluids that maintain pressure in your car, making sure you can brake and change gear smoothly.

Can I change my brake fluid myself?

You can change your brake fluid yourself if you have the right tools to hand. Find more advice on changing your brake fluid, or contact an experienced mechanic to make sure the change is carried out with no damage to your car.

Can you fail an MOT for low brake fluid?

Yes, your vehicle will fail its MOT if your brake fluid is below the minimum level (the low marker on your brake fluid reservoir) or is contaminated.
