What Leisure Battery Do I Need?

Choosing the right leisure battery for you will depend on how you’ll use it and what you need to power. All leisure batteries stocked at Euro Car Parts supply 12V of power, with a variety of battery capacities (Ah) available. Measured in ampere/hours (Ah), higher Ah ratings mean more power between charges.

Occasional weekend campers can get by with a smaller capacity battery, but if you’re planning a longer trip, or have more electricals to power, you’ll need a higher capacity battery. Don’t be tempted to just pick the battery with the largest capacity, though - this will mean it’ll also be much larger in size and add more weight. Make sure the leisure battery you pick will fit in the battery compartment of your caravan, motorhome, or boat.

You’ll also need to consider the battery type when making your choice. If your leisure battery is for a boat or marine vehicle, it’ll need to be a specific gel marine battery that is fully sealed in case of capsizing.

How Long Does A Leisure Battery Last?

This will depend on your leisure battery type and how often you maintain and use it, but generally it will last 4-6 years. A lead-acid battery can last 2-4 years, whereas a lithium battery can last up to 10 years without needing to be replaced.

In terms of day-to-day usage, a leisure battery will last anywhere from 12-48 hours off grid before needing to be recharged. However, we recommend not letting your battery drain below 50% to reduce risk of damage. Try a battery tester to check your vehicle’s battery capacity.

FAQs

How can I tell if my leisure battery needs replacing?

Your leisure battery will give you a few early warning signs that it needs replacing. Look out for issues like your appliances not lasting as long, slow charging, or any visible bulging in the battery’s casing. Make sure to replace your leisure battery at the first signs to avoid being stuck without power.

Should I leave my leisure battery on trickle charge?

Regularly connecting your battery to a trickle battery charger is a great way to keep it charged between trips, whilst also maintaining the overall health of your leisure battery.

Can I fit a leisure battery myself?

Fitting a leisure battery is quite tricky as it requires some electrical wiring. You should only attempt to replace your battery if you have the relevant tools and are experienced enough. We recommend getting your battery fitted professionally to ensure its proper functionality.

You can also consult your vehicle’s manual for specific battery replacement instructions and requirements.
