Recycling (WEEE) policy

Our Obligations To Consumers When Disposing Of Waste Electrical And Electronic Items

Every year approximately a million tonnes of household electrical and electronic waste is thrown away. Some electrical and electronic equipment ("EEE") contains hazardous substances such as mercury, lead and cadmium.

These types of substances are harmful to the environment as they accumulate through the food chain and may cause serious health effects in humans.

The UK has implemented European Community legislation, the main purpose of which is the prevention and minimisation of waste electrical and electronic equipment (“WEEE”). It also seeks to improve the environmental performance of producers, distributors and consumers involved in the life cycle of EEE. As a result, the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Regulations ("WEEE Regulations") is now in force in the United Kingdom.

Since 1 July 2007, producers and retailers of EEE need to have a system established for the collection, reuse and recycling of household WEEE in order to minimise the amount of WEEE going into landfill sites.

Euro Car Parts are obliged under these regulations to offer our customers free take-back of their WEEE on a like-for-like basis when customers buy from Euro Car Parts a new Electrical or Electronic product.

For example, if you buy a new EEE item from us we would accept your old WEEE item and prevent it going into a landfill site by disposing of it safely. Customers must return their WEEE item to us within 28 days of purchasing their new item.

Under the WEEE Regulations, all new electrical goods should now be marked with the crossed-out wheeled bin symbol shown below:

WEEE Regulations Symbol

Goods are marked with this symbol to show that they were produced after 13 August 2005, and should be disposed of separately from normal household waste so that they can be recycled.

Our obligations to take back WEEE only apply to household users of electrical items. If you are a non-domestic user of electrical equipment you will need to find a local collector or waste company to dispose of your waste.

Further information on the environmental impact of WEEE and the WEEE Regulations can be found on the following website: Environment Agency - WEEE: Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment
