Chevrolet Catalytic Converters

Chevrolet Catalytic Converters

Chevrolet Catalytic Converter

is the most important part of a car's emission control system. It uses a combination of heat and precious metals to promote a chemical reaction to convert harmful pollutants into less harmful emissions before they leave the exhaust system.

The operating temperature of a catalytic converter is between 350 to 400 degrees Celsius. Once the cat has reached this temperature a chemical reaction occurs as the exhaust gases flow through the coated monolith. The harmful gases are oxidised and converted in less harmful gases and passed out through the exhaust system.

Although Chevrolet Catalytic Converters are relatively simple components, faulty catalytic converters can lead to expensive repair bills, so it is vital that you get yours checked whenever possible. In addition to reducing your car's environmental impact, your catalytic converter also improves your car's performance by working with the Lambda sensor to determine just how much oxygen your car uses.

Over the years, car manufacturers have been trying to find ways to reduce the harmful pollutants produced by vehicles. In 1975 they came up with the catalytic converter – and this is now the most important part of a car’s emission control system. In 1993 it became the law in the UK for new cars to be sold with catalytic converters in order to meet European emissions standards; now cars are often produced with multiple cats as standards become more stringent. The catalytic converter is beneficial not just to the environment but also to your car’s performance. However, it’s essential to have it checked regularly as faulty cats are expensive to repair. The Lambda sensor works in conjunction with the catalytic converter to determine how much oxygen the car is using, so this also should be checked if you have an exhaust issue.
